About WindRank
Choosing where and when to go should not be guesswork.
Our mission
WindRank helps kitesurfers, windsurfers and wingfoilers decide where and when to travel. Instead of relying on marketing pictures or a single friend's memory of one good week, we look at years of historical wind data for the exact calendar dates of your trip, and rank spots accordingly.
One score for kitesurf, windsurf and wingfoil
The share of days that offer enough hours above the usable wind threshold. A day only counts when the wind holds long enough to actually ride.
A penalty applied to long runs of days without usable wind. A destination that averages good numbers but regularly strings together windless days scores lower than a steadier one.
How the two are combined
The final score is a weighted average of availability and consistency, normalised so the two weights always add up to the full score.
What is not in the score
Water temperature and comfort (wetsuit guidance) are shown separately on every spot. They help you pack, but they never change the WindRank Score or the ranking.
The data
We use historical weather and marine records from Open-Meteo: hourly wind, gusts, wind direction, wave height and water temperature. For each search we take the same calendar dates across several past years, depending on the history available for that spot, and aggregate them.
Limits worth knowing
- This is a historical statistical indicator, not a real-time forecast. It describes the odds, not next week's weather.
- Local effects matter: thermal breezes, coastal orientation, mountains and microclimates can differ from the modelled data.
- Always check local forecasts, official notices and safety conditions before going on the water.
